The word “benefit” tastes like soggy Shredded Wheat. The word “family” tastes like fresh-out-of-the-oven Tollhouse chocolate chip cookies. The word “old-fashioned” tastes like Country Time instant lemonade. These things have been true for as long as I can remember, but it was only a few years ago that I learned there was a word for this phenomenon: synesthesia.
